USS Denver (LPD-9), an Austin-class amphibious transport dock, is the third ship of United States Navy to bear this name. Denver’s keel was laid 7 July 1964 at Lockheed Shipbuilding and Construction Company, Seattle, Washington. She was launched 23 January 1965, christened by Mrs. John A. Love, wife of the Governor of Colorado, and commissioned 26 October 1968. Denver is currently the oldest active ship in US service, following the deactivation of Enterprise on Dec 1, 2012.

  • Made MM2 in 1975, worked for/with Chief Clydesdale in Aft plant. Cross decked from Blue Ridge during Operation Frequent Wind.

  • I served onboard the Denver from 1983-87, great first tour. Sure have some great memories! 

  • I was on the Denver from 2001 to 2003. I was the LPO of the Aft plant.

  • I served onboard Denver from July 1970 to Dec. 1973. Participated in many operations off Vietnam coastline. Launched first flights of helicopters into N. Vietnam in 1971. Signalman Third when i departed. Old Girl is still serving our country well after all these years. Home ported out of Japan right now.Glad to be a part of your forum. Anybody else have any fond memories of Denver " Pride of the Gator Navy" ? Crossed the equator twice becoming a Golden Shellback.
  • I served onboard the USS Denver for 3 and 1/2 years during the mid 70's. I also refueled her many times as a civilian working onboard the USNS Yukon, USNS Guadalupe and USNS Tippecanoe.
  • I worked with a fellow while aboard the USS MOUNT VERNON LSD-39 Radio Central named Jack Scott. He was always talking about the Denver. What a character he was.
  • Was on the Denver for a little while back in 1989, until I got in trouble :).
