  • I am a plank owner for the VANDEGRIFT. I commissioned it as the Electronic Readiness Officer (EMO on any other ship) in 1984. Todd Shipyards, Seattle built the ship and its first home port was Long Beach. My department head, the CSO, was Paul Murdock, a fine naval officer who taught me a lot. My CO was Clint Conway. VANDEGRIFT is one of the few ships in the US Navy destined never to have its name spelled correctly (it's pennant hanging from the overhead in the Food Court at the 32nd Street Naval Station is spelled "VANDEGRIFT."
