USS Ponce (LPD-15), an Austin-class amphibious transport dock, is the only ship of the United States Navy that is named for Ponce in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, which in turn was named after the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon, the first governor of Puerto Rico and European discoverer of Florida.

  • I signed on to the Ponce in October 1975 in Rotterdam, and signed off in December of 1976.  I completed the North Atlantic Cruise 1975, and then the Med Cruise in 1976.  We were extended for about 3 extra months to be on site to evacuate Lebanon.  We were scheduled to be part of the NY Bicentennial Display for the 4th of July down the Hudson River.  Instead we escorted Refugees to Naples.
