At the end of boot camp we were allowed a 12 hr. liberty and got to leave the base for the day. What did you do on your boot camp liberty???

All I remember was that I had a bad cold and fever. Sweated it out one night in the laundry drying room.

I'm posting on Facebook in a group for boot camp memories. I've gotten more than 50 comments so far. Many of them say they didn't get liberty in boot camp. Some don't remember and others are recalling what they did and some of them are pretty good. I'm hoping for some sharing of memories here on Navyvets as well

I could be wrong, I don’t remember like I used to, but I don’t remember liberty. Then again, we got out early do to the War and so many recruits being pushed through.

We were given a 12 hour liberty unsupervised at the end of boot camp. I rode a bus to downtown San Diego where a small group of us walked around the streets looking for fun. I was only 19 and couldn't go in the bars so I found a theater that had a live Burlesque show. I went in and took a seat near the stage and watched the show. A beautiful woman with red hair came out and took it off to the sounds of Big brother and the holding company, "Turtle Blues" as sung by Janis Joplin. Even now, fifty years later I can't hear this song without visualizing this magic moment.
