It was late 1974, and USS Hector was moored to the pier at Mare Island, California, and was due to depart in about a week for the island of Guam. I was down in the upper foundry reading a magazine late one night. It was after taps and I hadn't gone to bed yet.

I was riding the escalator at the top of the escalator I had to step over Eddy Alberts Jr. who was in make as wounded airman laying on a strecher. Meeting and having conversation with Robert Weber on plane elevator as we stood watching over the water.

He was the best commander I served under.I enjoyed my service aboard the Lexington.Met and married a girl from Pensacola. Had many good times in Gunners Div. OK HERE I GO AGAIN DOWN MEMORY LANE. THE ONLY THING THAT TRULY SCARED ME DURING BOOT WAS THE FIRE DRILL TRAINING AT THE "BLOCKHOUSE". WHEN THE CLOSED TYHOSE STEDEL DOORS AND LIT THE DIESEL I RUNIED A PERFECTLY GOOD PAIR OF SCIVVIES BEFOR WE FINALLY FUMBLED OUR WAY TO THE DOOR AND GOT IT OPEN. Hector was in WESPAC on its '73-'74 cruise. I was now a third class Petty Officer, which meant I no longer had to stand hole watches underway, but it DID mean they would find other odd crap for me to do.

As my life aboard USS Hector progressed, I was awarded the title of a Roving Security Watch Stander. This watch entailed going all over the ship after hours and inspecting the many and varied compartments to be sure there was no fire, flooding or other mischief going on undiscovered.

It came to pass that in 1974, it was almost impossible for the USS HECTOR cooks to produce a single meal that the crew would actually eat. It became such a huge problem, the captain actually had to request something be done about the problem, as so much "good" food was going in the dumpster.

I have posted my adventures on just how I got to the USS Hector (AR-7), and the ordeals I had to endure while aboard her. Getting back home again was almost as much "fun", to be sure.

I went to RTC San Diego and was assigned to company 214 on July 9, 1971. I was a bit over weight, so I became "chow runner' which means I had to run every time the company showed up for mess call and ask permission for the company to come in and eat. NOT a job that had any HONOR, to be sure.

I first heard about Japanese Kendo, or fencing, when I was at Molder A School from a fellow classmate named Tom Kitchen. Tom was very much into the Martial Arts, and was pretty good at it.

I was on mess cook duty in May 1972 in the CPO mess. Now, it wasn't so bad most of the time. During the day, I would clean the berthing areas and locker room, and fetch the laundry for the Chiefs.

The Hector foundry was a good sort of place to work...such as it was. We had a varied and jovial group of guys that got along OK most of the time. But we also had one strange and rather acidic individual that we also had to put up with.
