Sheldon E Aarens, Lieutenant 1944.

In the practice of other Navy Vets sites, I am providing information about my father. My dad Lieutenant Sheldon E Aarens served in the USNR 1941-1946. His service was on net laying ships. He was the Executive Officer on the USS Chestnut (AN 11) 1942-1944. For a brief period in 1944, he was captain of the Chestnut.

He returned home to California in April, 1944 where he assumed command of the net laying ship USS Winterberry (AN 56) upon its commission in May, 1944. He was in command of the USS Winterberry in the South Pacific until August 1945. The ship participated in the assault on Okinawa April-June 1945. Along with its net laying duties, the Winterberry participated in fighting off kamikaze attacks on American ships and helped bring down attacking aircraft. The ship received a battle star for that effort.

After the war, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He was briefly stationed at the Naval command at Astoria, Oregon. He left the navy in 1946.
