It’s been even longer for me…57 years ago. I was only 24 then. My ship JRP DE-1034 had been stationed there for 3 years prior to the Cuban Missile Crisis. The S***t hit the fan on night when the Shore Patrol pulled me from my favorite bar stool @ the Top Hat on Duval street & sent me back to the ship. Shortly thereafter the ships lines were singled up and we were underway w/o our captain. He arrived via Helo a short time later. Port & Starboard watches were set through the conflict.

I was just a kid in  the 7th grade. I don't think I was aware of the threat we were facing.
