Lambert’s Point Deperming Station, Norfolk on the Elizabeth River. I was a cook here in 1967. One time the carpenter’s shop below the galley caught on fire from a construction barge and crane that was working on the pileings and boardwalk. We believe some sparks from the crane stack caught the pileings on fire and spread. It did a fair amount of damage before the fire tugs arrived to put the fire out. Some sailors had to go to the main naval base to the barracks until repairs were made. They demagnetized ships here, and as I recall in the year I spent here we did mostly submarines. We took a liberty launch back and forth from shore to the station. I had my car parked at the landing.
