Was aboard Henry W. Tucker in 70 for a reserve cruise and civies weren't allowed then either. Long time ago. Mayport was my favorite.

I was a few years ahead of you guys at Mayport. There was a bar on Mayport Road owed by a retired Chief Normburg. You could get credit there if you were in uniform had an ID and told the Chief what ship you were on. You could get credit up to a week before ships movement or your separation. We also had to join locker clubs to keep our civies because we weren't allowed civies on board.

I considered staying in for the duty there as well. Great place to live.

I served aboard two Tin Cans out of Mayport, USS Forrest Royal DD 872 and Harwood DD 861. 1964 to 1967. I liked the fishing so much that after I got out I stayed in Jacksonville for another 30 years just so I could catch flounder at the Ferry Landing. Best duty on the East Coast.

caught a lot of whiting and sea trout. I think they were referred to as weakfish. sheepshead fishing was lot of fun off of those rocks. while we were fishing one day my wife saw a plane off of one of the carriers hit the water just outside the rocks into the ocean. all I saw was the splash, when she yelled and I turned. Good thing there were no injuries to the pilots.
