I was onboard the USS Nimitz from Sept/1979 thru
May/1980. The rescue attempt of the Iranian hostages occurred during this cruise. I was a member of the VA-35 black panther's old A6 squadron. We were at sea from 1/2/1979 thru 5/27/80(?) without any liberty. They actually gave us beer during this cruise. I also got my shellback card for crossing the equator during this cruise. Is there anyone out there that remembers this?

I was on board the Nimitz during the Desert Storm War, I was with VF-211 flying F-14 Tomcats, we were the Fighting Checkmates, out of NAS Miramar San Diego Cal.The Nimitz was my last carrier to be on before I retired from the Navy. I made two Cruises on her both going into the Arabian Gulf.

I was on board the Nimitz, with VQ-2, when she got sent to Iran, during the hostage crisis. They yanked us off just as she passed the Rock of Gibraltar. We were told that if we were still on board when Nimitz cleared the Straits, we were going to stay with her all the way to Iran. Shortly after being taken off, they sent 45 of us, and 2 "Whales" with flight crews, all the way around the world to join up with the "Ike". Hmm, maybe we should have stayed on board the Nimitz. LMAO
