I am helping refurb Sick Bay on the Iowa and wondered if anyone could tell me what the typical Medical Department complement would be: how many doctors, Chiefs, corpsman etc.

Chief Stegal, my understanding is they never repaired turret two and the expense is one of the reasons Iowa was decommissioned before it's originally scheduled date. The intent of the Museum management is that turret two will never be opened to public access and treated as a memorial to the 47 men who died that day.

Was down aboard the Iowa, on the 3rd of this month, what thrill it was just to see the Grand Lady again, seen her once in the last 60 years, in 1984, she had that same smell and feel as the first time in 1951.  What a Grand Lady she will always be.  The USS Iowa BB-61.  Amen

I was stationed aboard IOWA 6-89 through 01-91.  Made her last deployment and then decommed her.  Without a doubt the best 18 months of my career.  Reported aboard 6 weeks after the turret explosion and was assigned to turret 2 as LCPO.  Six weeks later was assigned to turret 1. Reported aboard E-7 and made E-8 4 months later.
