I was on the Coontz from April 1964 until January 13, 1967 and deployed two tours of duty to the Tonkin Gulf. I was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1969. The ole girl had one fantastic crew when I was on her, and everyone who served on her did an outstanding job. We made short meat out of anything and anyone who thought they could do the ship and crew any wrong happenings as we showed the idiots from North Vietnam in their lousy lil ole PT boats who attacked us. We tried to outrun the PT boats, but we couldn't do that so we called in the F4-Phantoms from the carrier, who sank all three PT boats. We captured 19 prisoners and when we went to DeNaang to offload them, South Vietnam wouldn't let us since we were not at war with North Vietnam, only a police action. Duuu! We offloaded the prisoners to an oiler out in the harbor who had a brig on the ship. Since we caused an international incident by sinking three North Vietnamese PT boats, the ship had to find some country who would accept us as friendly. The only place we could go was Tiawan, who was happy to give us a chance of R&R relaxiation. Hohg Kong, Japan, and the Phillipines would not let us come into their country. The Coontz went home after our stay in their country. Home was San Diego, California.
