July (HOT) 1967 Our squad of the Choir was chosen to be the last precision whale boat team trained at NTC SanDiego. Our first shipp a reinactment of Coronado's landing from the 3 masted Barkentine "the Swift of Ipswitch" out of Santa Barbara. Later when in the fleet when asked how long we had been in the Navy we could always say"So long that my 1st ship was a 3 masted barkentine"

You said that you were there from February 1970 to February 1972. I was at Ft. Allen from May, 1970 to December, 1971.

You may of left just before I arrived Ft Allen. I see that my school ended in the first week of February and I then had two weeks leave before I went to Puerto Rico. I must of got there near the end of Feb. So I was there from Feb 1970 to Feb 1972. I believe I was in watch section 4, but not to sure of that.

You are so right. I remember that he drilled us in our music very meticulous. I was hoping to try out for the Navy Choir, but when I got my assignment to RM "A" School I changed my mind. I am glad that I did. My career in the Navy helped me secure the job that I have held for the last 30 years. I work in the ITS Department at Baylor University in Waco, Tx.

Do you remember the director's name. It slips my mind right now. The BJ Choir was a fun unit. We got liberty every weekend. If we were in uniform ( most of us were) and we at a eating establishment we usually would do a few numbers. The Music Union got whiff of that and we had to stop that. We sang the National Anthem at several Charger football games. We also made several tapes of the anthem that we used over and over by TV stations when they were signing off at Midnight. You hardly see that any more. I swear that I have heard several of the tapes that we did in my area of the country.
