NAS Miramar

The station is best known as the location of the TOPGUN training program and the movie of the same name. In 1996 the school was relocated to Naval Air Station Fallon. During the heyday of TOPGUN the station was nicknamed "Fightertown USA".

D. Gordon Brown, just wanted to say that NDRC had one of the best softball teams on the base when I was NAS Op-Det from Nov 80-Aug 83.

I was station at Miramar Oct 1964 to Oct 1966 right out of boot camp in San Diego .  It was like being out in the desert you had to look out for rattle snakes when you walked to the EX from the barracks.

I was IS right from Lowery AFB in Denver, assigned to TARPS at VF-124 from Dec 1978 through Oct 1980. The shop was not even set up until 6 mos. after I arrived.  Temp. assignment was in aircrew records tracking quals and flight time. I got to go through all the quals myself, including Martin Baker seat shot! Went to reserve F-4 group and got a ride! I have many fond memories of this place!

I was with VF-302 from 77 to 80. One of our guys set off an ejection seat which landed down by the next hanger.

After a month's leave and back from Subic, I reported to VF-142 at Miramar NAS in December of 1970. Assigned to the base medical dispensary. Sick Call for Navy and Dependents was non-stop there. Drove a crash truck to the air strip from time to time. We would hear a loud alarm horn in the dispensary indicating an emergency at the air strip. Myself, (when on duty), another corpsman, and a physician would respond in one of those crash trucks.
Then, sometime later the squadron went to El Centro for a week or two.
Also remember going to Jack In The Box on Balboa and Convoy avenues for lunch sometimes. One time me and another corpsman drove an ambulance up to the drive through window to order lunch. We had the overhead emergency flashing lights on during the whole time. Boy did we get some stares. It was so funny.
Did we do bad?
And finally, in June of '71 we flew to Alameda to join up with the Big E, which was being readied for Vietnam.
Last goodbyes to girlfriend and family at the terminal.
We took off from Miramar in a four engine prop, and I noticed that the seats in it were all installed backwards. Kinda strange. But of course, back in those days, everything was like,..... kinda,... beyond friggin' strange?!!
Indeed it was my friends. Indeed it was.
