hi guys, im mike, i was vs 30 in queonset pt rhode island then we moved to cecil field fla. i attended plane captain school in memphis tn. i was with them dureing my whole stent in the navy, 1970/74. best 4yrs of my life. we at that time were still useing the old s2, great old plane, i really enjoyed working on them and flying on them. we did at that time all our carrier quals on the old lady lex when she was still in pennsacola fla. ive driven thru the old base several times, brings tears to my eyes but the one good thing is the old vs 30 squadron hangar is still there being used, its the only hangar left. ive tryed to have the guard there let me inside to look around but no luck. you can still see inside from outside the gate and still see where the flight line was. pretty much everything else is gone, sad but i guess thats the times. i was hopeing maybe they would have started a museum there like they did at queonset point but i havent seen one.

LOL I did not see you wrote Diamondbacks...that is funny. Looking back, I do miss a lot of things that back in my younger years, hated. Like VS-30, what a tough squadron that was but we were highly rated by D.C. and with that image to uphold, you had to work harder than most to keep that recognition.

It was sad when I found out NAS Cecil Field was shut down. Has anyone heard if they still are keeping it as a backup base for other future closures? One argument was made that Cecil is a prime base for it lacks all the development that other bases are experiencing. People move into the new homes only to start complaining about the Military noise which has put a damper on operations. I forget which base was the issue in Virginia but that is the case for closing it down and reopening Cecil to accommodate the troops. I saw on Google maps the tear down of Cecil field barracks and other buildings but all hangars are still in place. The commission stated it would cost a lot less money to reopen it than to build a whole new base. Gee, makes a lot of sense too me. That would be nice to see it reopen as it was a nice base overall.
As a reservist at NAS Lemoore, a fellow AE2 shipmate was at Cecil at the same time I was. We did not know one another at the time but we shared good stories. By any chance did you know a Ralph Lawless? Good guy.

Tim, thanks I meant to write cutters at the end of Diamond and for some reason wrote baseball on the mind. ; - )

Well Tim it sure does seem as though we've stepped on some of the same ground/seas as each other. I was only with VS-30 for a year, and Yes I was ecstatic to get to be on the Enterprise, I am after all a big Star Trek fan. I was there in 1995-1996. The year I was there, was the last year that the Navy had A6 Intruders, and onboard with us was the last squadron VA-75 the Sunday Punchers. It was there decomm cruise. It was very sad for me since I came to the Fleet as an Attack person with VA-85, I hated those A6's then, but man I miss them.

Hi Glenn, Interesting, I did not know VS-30 Deployed onboard U.S.S Enterprise.

I was with VS-30 from '87-90 when we deployed with U.S.S. Saratoga and one tour with U.S.S. Independence (Around the Horn of South America from Virginia to San Diego).

I was stationed there with VS-30 the Diamondbacks. When I was with VA-85 the Black Falcons aboard the USS America, VS-22 the Checkmates were our S-3 squadron there onboard there. VS-30 deployed onboard BIG "E" when I was with them.
