I remember in boot camp in 1950, they would assemble us out by the barracks with our seabag and have us dump everything out and then a 3rd class would say "reach down in that pile and pull out a flat hat, everybody got one? there is always a 10 percent and some would hold up a white hat or some other item. once everyone had a flat hat he would say put it in your seabag and so forth. The flat hat was optional when I was in Japan.
I was issued a flat hat in August 1961 during boot camp.I never wore it.
