Event Description

Featuring 28 original artworks from the U.S. Navy’s Art Collection, the Coast Guard Art Program and the Navy Memorial’s collection, this exhibit illustrates the history and evolution of Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard aviation. “The Art of Naval Aviation” will be on display at the Navy Memorial April 2011-March 2012. Naval aircraft are used as a means for projecting power, hitting targets and moving supplies to critical areas around the world – without the need for a ground base. Naval Aviation was born in early 1911, when Eugene Ely landed his plane on the deck of the armored cruiser USS Pennsylvania in San Francisco Bay, making the feat the first successful shipboard landing of an aircraft
