"Ha, ha. Now that I think about it; our "Control Board" was in manual more than automatic.  True, we didn't have the "fun" of cutting burners in & out and driving the mic valve.  But all this automation left time for the burnerman to work on his golf…"

"I attended BT "A"" school at GLAKES from Sept-73 to Nov-73.  I graduated 3rd in class.  Sure learned a lot in a very short time.  Sure did enjoy the Steam Lab during the hot Indian Summer.  Good training for WestPAC cruises.

"It is sad to see an old steamer retire.  If you have not had the opportunity to visit the Jeremiah O'Brian in San Francisco, do so.  Once a month they light off one of the boilers and turn over the engine.  It is something to descend into the engine…"

I served as a BT on the Ranger from Dec. 1973 to Jun 1977.  I was assigned to P2 Division, 2MMR.  I was the P2 division DCPO in 1976.  I'm looking forward to when the old "Boat" opens as a museum in Portland."
