"I did a few cruises on the Forrestal as a member of VA-85, from 1962-1964. I remember watching the C130 land on the flight deck after a few touch and goes. Great ship and it would be wonderful if it could be restored and put on display."
John, it is a damned shame that they couldn't save her, with her history! But, the Navy decided she was in no shape for any use, not even a museum. She is sitting next to JFK in South Philly having been stripped of anything usable or hazardous. She awaits her final voyage to the ship breakers. Sara will follow when she is cut up. The Sara vets has raised a lot of money to save her. But, she is beyond use as well. In Forrestal and Sara's stead they have offered up the JFK as a museum. It appears she will be heading for Newport, RI in the future!
