"I was in the regular Navy from 1958-62, and USNR from 1970-78. If Roger C. Enright was there 1975-78, he was there when VP64 arrived each summer. Back then there were only 4 combat ready patrol squadrons on the East Coast. Each of us relieved the…"
"Wm. E. Gardner was in around the same time as me. However, I didn't serve on a tin can, just travelled on them from Guantanamo Bay to Jamaica for Liberty. I was in GTMO from 1960-62 and our only liberty was when a tin can would ask the Commandant…"
"I just got back from a wonderful week in Guantanamo Bay. If any of you ex-GTMOites would like to join us for next year's trip to Guantanamo Bay, go to www.gitmobay.org and join the Association. Details for next year's trip should be available within…"
"If everything continues to go well, members of the Guantanamo Bay Association will be going back to GTMO for a week, in March 2015. We are limited to 70 visiitors. Even though the buildings have changed dramatically, I am looking forward to this…"
"It sounds like we were in ECHO COMPANY together. I was a gunner on a light 30 machine gun crew. We may have been assigned to your platoon, sometimes. I only put 4 years in the regular Navy, but after I got married and had 3 kids, I joined the…"
"I was on the first floor of the same barracks. I don't know which direction was East and which was West. However, if you approached the back of the barracks from the swimming pool, I lived on your right side.
"It would be great if you and I got to meet and talk about our time in GITMO. I don't know if you have checked our website, but it might be difficult to get hotel reservations for the reunion. We already have somewhere around 80 people registered,…"
"Hi Glenn Duffy. We were at NAS Norfolk at the same time. I was assigned to the NAS Personnel Department. I got there in December 1958 and left in June 1960. My next two years were spent at GITMO."
"I don't know for sure. The first thing to do is fill out the application. Once you are enrolled in the prorgram, the medical staff that is assigned to you will answer all of your questions."
"Al, you should definitely register with the VA. You are entitled to medical benefits that could be very important to you in the future. I retired at age 60 with no other insurance. The VA took extremely good care of me including cataract surgery…"
"To Mike Sullivan, I think that you explained things to Al Lieberman in a fantastic manner. Yes Al..............you are a veteran, the same as any honorably discharged veteran. Although I am a life member of the VFW and member of the American…"
"The picture of the Admin Building is very familiar. I worked in the Naval Station Personnel Office, which was to the left as you came through the main entrance on the first floor. The Radio Shack was next to the Personnel Office. I used to…"
Yes,I remember the machine gunners,a seaman at the boatshed by the name of Whitehead from Arkansas was one of them,I would like to make the reunion in Charleston,I have been there a few times visiting my Grandson when he was in the Citadel colledge,he is now in the army in Arizona in I.T. school.,We have one son and 3 grandsons.
I was on the opposite end of the barracks..I was a fire team leader in the 3rd platoon of negdf. My main job at the boatshed was boat operator or Coxswain. We mostly carried FTG personell to and from the ships.I was in the navy for 8 years ,bm3 was as far as I got, getting out worked good for me,I got married gave up drinking ,been married 50 years, retired from ALCOA Aluminum co.I have had a better life than I would have if I had stayed in the navy.
My bunk was on the 1st floor ,I guess it would be the east wing across the street from the mess hall and I remember a workout room across the street from us,the dorm I was in was the boatshed people. It has been over 50 years now.I live in East Tn 30 miles south of Knoxville.
John,I was at the naval station boatshed from jan.62-july 63.I must have known Summerall en3,I was a bm3 who operated boats and the enginemen were the engineers on our boats.I remember the officer in charge was a LT JG Graves from Alabama a good man who was an ex engineman.
Hi John... Thanks for the invite. I was at GITMO once on the USS Kalamazoo AOR 6.
We had completed an overhaul and was sent to GITMO for refresher training. Being an engineer and working in the fireroom I didn't get to much time to take in the sites. I did get the chance to go to Cable Beach. Great place to lay in the sun and relax and swim.
Thanks for the kind comments John... I did indeed have an interesting navy career. Not many navy wx guessers ride a coast guard cutter throughout Philippine waters on the job. I actually did visit GITMO while aboard the USS Intrepid... she was on shake-down after a refit for an enclosed bow and steam cats. We pulled liberty in Guantanamo City and of course the base...

John, Plan on being there.
I found a couple of Marines from the area that were in Gitmo.
They said when I get some info to let them know.
