"I enlisted in the U.S.Navy August 25, 1972 - August 22, 1975. Went back into the U.S.Navy Reserves (Weekend Driller) for two years (1980- 1981) drilling in Wilmington, N.C. at the Reserve Center there."
Yeah, I thought I was going to join the Navy and see the world, or at least serve a tour on ship, but, My administrative scores on the tests were high so ended up in Norfolk, VA on shore duty for 3 years and working for NATO and not the…"

I used to do the same thing. On weekends (which were 3 days for me) I would go to NAS North Island and grab the military hop to McCord AFB in Tacoma Washington to go home for the weekend. I did this so often , I had friends that didn't realize I was still active duty in the Navy! Lol. We seem to have had a very similar career. I did love my Navy time, I just wish I had been able to go to sea and see at least part of the world.
David, I had a very similar experience to yours while I was in the Navy. I went to San Diego for boot sept of 72 for company 72-369. Then on to a shore duty billet at 32nd street San Diego. I spent my whole short Naval career there. I too wish that I had gone on ships to see the world. But the Navy had other plans for this SKSN. In early 75 the Navy was down sizing. So I put in a request half on a lark to return to civilian life. I was sure it would not be approved because of what my section leader had said. (Son, you perform a needed service in a department that is hard to fill billets for. (Receipt Control) It was denied by everyone up to the Captain who must of had some positions to furlow, because he approved it and I was separated in mid January of 75. I was sad upon leaving because my dream, the whole reason I had joined, was to have seen the world. It's a dream that remains unfulfilled even today.
