"John, The NSD communications room was on the second floor of the NSD admin building by the docks. We did not have any radio gear so all messages had to be sent from the radio room in the base admin building where you were. The only way to get them…"
"Bill, thanks for sharing that. I will see if I can find a copy.. I did not know he had the CMH.
In late 1964 I was transferred to NSD communications. That consisted of a small room across from the Capt's office with two model 33 teletype machines…"
"White Hat Club 1964. This was for the enlisted personal that were on ships. There was an 18 wheeler truck rebuilt as a bus that carried them back and forth from the docks to the club. On the base, we used to call it the "cattle car"."
"This is one of two houses that we got moved to after we got thrown out of the Bay Hill Barracks for being too rowdy. We were working very long hour and would come back to the barracks at midnight or later and not want to sleep…"
"John, I see you were at Willow Grove. When I went off active duty in '66, I joined the reserves in Buffalo. I transferred to Navel Air because the week-end warriors worked better than going every Wednesday. We used to fly S2's to Willow Grove. I…"
"In the photo below, if my memory serves me correctly the building visible just to the left of the barracks is the Catholic Church located on the next hill over."
"Thank you John, I stand corrected. It was the base chapel, not a specific denomination. Also, I was also in the other barracks. I was on the first floor, right side looking at it from the pool. -- Gary"
"I think the place we spent the most time was at the coffee shop across the street from the library. It would have been between the open air theater and the main road to the Marine base and NSD / FTG / Windward AirBase. I'm way to old to remember…"
"Kevin, In one of your photos I saw a number of pontoon boats. Were they added for rent along with the sail boats we had in 1964? The water plant photos bring back a lot of memories. Bill Norris and I were part of the crew that unloaded all of parts…"
" Randolfo, I was also working at Crane Hill from 65-66. I was an ETR and worked on some of the RADAR systems, RADAR repeaters, the mapping system. I was also responsible for the digital door locks. I also spent most of my free time in the water…"
Hello Old Friend, I am so happy to find you here. It seems like such a short time ago that we were young and in the prime of our lives, in Gitmo. The years have flown by for me, and the last 10 seem like 2 years. What are you doing now, and how is that sweet lady, Aili (hope I spelled her name correctly) doing? Nancy and I thought she is such a good person. As you know, I retired a few years ago, but I hated the first year so much, I considered going back and asking for my old job back. I had worked 7 days a week, and mostly 12 hour days for so long, it must have been addictive. The last 11 years that I worked was after going thru a downsizing at Kelloggs, after working for them 12.5 years. I was 54 years old at the time, wondering if at that age, just how employable was I?. Ralston foods was growing after a huge downsizing and a horrible strike. They wanted a maintenance/repair/construction supervisor with a lot of experience. I was hired, worked hard, to show them that an old guy could keep up. I went in early and stayed later then required every day. I got to the point where I really liked the job, and it became enjoyable. I did not mind at all, spending large amounts of time there. Long story short, I had some bad breaks due to plant closings. and downsizing, but I always landed on my feet. I have been fortunate, and am very thankful for the outcome. This year we will have 47 years married, 4 daughters, 3 son's-in-law, that are more like sons, 9 grandchildren, and we are very happy. I am so happy to re-connect. Bill, norriswf@aol.com,
