The Chevalier was a Gearing Class Destroyer named after Godfrey de Courcelles Chevalier, an early Naval aviator.  He was the first man to pilot an plane launched from a catpult of a Naval vessel.  The DD-805 was the second Chevalier, the first, DD-451, was sunk in World War 2.  The DD-805 served in the later part of WW2, Korea, and Vietnam.  She was decommissioned in1972 ans sold to South Korea.

  • I was on the USS Chevalier DD 805 in July of 1971. If I remember correctly, we departed San Diego for what would be The Chevalier's last West Pac cruise in August of that year.  We arrived on the Vietnam gun line sometime in September.  If anybody remembers anything about this last cruise, please add it on here.
