  • Yeah Admiral Charbonnet (I spelled it wrong before) retired in sept 1978. That's when I got out. Had just gotten married, and had a 1 year old son, and decided sea duty wasn't going to be too neat now.
He was a fighter pilot, and had flown all the carriers to that date, taught at pensacola, and had me running his boat like it was a airplane. All 100% shipshape and airworthy!
He was a wild man, great parties! Taught me a lot. Was always quizzing me on nautical rules or naval histories. Stuff like "how many sails on a six masted schooner?" Who would know this stuff? ( he did)
From the old navy, actually had more hours in props than in jets! His tales were what got me into flying (private pilot, not military).
  • I was with flag ops at nas nola from 79 thru 84 I believe. Great bunch of guys there flew as crew chief on C-131 miss that old plane.I never met Admiral Charbonet I believe Admiral Palmer was boss when I got there. All the guys talked about Admiral Charbonet and what a great man he was.Wish I had gotten the chance to meet him . There's a command for NAS New Orleans on here as well.

  • I was the CNAVRES Flag barge POINC and Engineer from 9/75 to 9/78. Great shore duty and Vice Admiral Charbonet was a really interesting man to work for. Also he had a great family I got to know very well.
After VN and San Diego, New Orleans was a great place for a sailor, people really liked us in that great party town!
  • I was a Master Chief attached to the Naval Air Reserve Force from 1983 till 1987.  I was in the Aircraft Maintenance Department under Capt Jannis, in Charge of the Quality Assance and Facilities Management.  I also was on the Inspection team' did a lot of traveling but enjoy the pleasure of being able to meet so many fine Sailors, marines, and Civilians on the Staff as well at all the Naval Air Stations.  Transfer to NAS New Orleans in 1987 and retired from VA-204 in Oct, 1989.  Miss a lot of good Friends down in New Orleans. Thanks for starting this site.
