Guantanamo Bay Naval Base (also called Gitmo or GTMO) is located on 45 square miles (120 km2) of land and water at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba which the United States leased for use as a coaling (fueling) station following the Cuban-American Treaty of 1903. The base is located on the shore of Guantánamo Bay at the southeastern end of Cuba. It is the oldest overseas U.S. Navy Base, and the only one in a country with which the United States does not have diplomatic relations. The Cuban government opposes the presence of the naval base, claiming that the lease is invalid under international law. The U.S. government claims that the lease is valid.

  • Was in Security division at NAS Leeward Point 1959-1962.  Worked out of the Kennels.

  • I was at leeward point from 59 to 61 last duty was the crash crew, before that the fuel crew. I remember first day in crash crew plan hit the arresting gear so hard it whiplashed it sent chain links out of 3/4 of a mile, one went through a fuel truck.

chief mc Cormack was crash chief and chief Cullity was the fuel chief both were very good chiefs. I left when they started putting artillery emplacements in.

  • Yeoman Personnel Office McCalla Field Dec 57 - Sep 60.  I bought a mobile home at NOB trailer park so my new wife could join me.  Had a 1941 Cadillac Fleetwood that I sold when I left.

  • I was stationed at GITMO in 1983 as a RMCS...Loved the diving and spent most of my off time on the beach.

  • I was stationed at Windward NAS on crash boat crew from 1974-1975. Although we mostly served as a taxi for the CO of NAS Leeward, we also played Dunkin Doughnuts with the carriers and provided water ambulance service for the Leeward island. Worked with some great guys. Enjoyed the beaches, Hidden Beach was my favorite. It was an awesome experience for this 18 year old.
  • I was stationed at NAS from Oct 9, 1962 until late May 1965. I served eighteen month and twelve month consecutive tours . I worked on the second deck of the Admin Bldg above McCalla Field for Chief Sam West and the boss was CDR Robert E. Scheuhing. Good times.

  • I was stationed at the Crash Crew on  Mc Calla side from 3/65 to 6/66 then on the leeward Point side from 6/66 to 3/67. I remember the Mine Field Explosion in 65 twice and the emergency runs to the Hospital to cover the Evac. Also remember The Hurricane Inez, it tore to hell out of Leeward Point.

  • I was an Instructor 1982 and than went through on my Ship 1983 USS King DDG-41

  • Was in GITMO from Nov 1965 to Nov. 1966. Worked at NAS at first as their supply person until I made 3rd Class and then moved over to NAS Supply.

The two things I remember are NEGDEF, getting up at 4:00 AM on a Saturday for an exercise near the fence line and Hurricane Inez.

Naval Air Station, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba

Assigned to VC-10 as Squadron Corpsman from 1969-1971. TAD to NAS Dispensary. Qualified on HU-16 type aircraft and flew SAR missions for NAS. I had a relatively good tour, accompanied by wife and son and lived at VL-603C on main side. The downside of my tour was two back-to-back Flight Surgeons who were definitively not people persons and felt that the Corpsmen were their whipping boys. Worked for one of the greatest chiefs that I ever had the pleasure to know HMC Charles M Jones, USN. That man…

Guantanamo Bay Cuba, NAS Medical Dispensary

Was in GTMO from January 1966 to January 1967, worked and resided at the NAS Medical Dispensary up on the hill, for LT. Doctor Robert White, who was awesome. Remember the early morning drills for NEGDEF, was on the Search And Rescue Crew that flew the HU-16 out of McCalla Field and was the Sick Bay Corpsman. It was great duty, had a bunch of awesome Corpsman to work with, unfortunately can't remember all of their names. Jenkins was the senior Corpsman, Larry Fink taught me the finer points of…
