  • I schooled aboard the USS Recruit 1964 company 036, I got a chance to see the USS Recruit Oct. 2010 it is a memorial now. People in San Diego on bikes and walking thanked me for being in the Navy. Where the Training center was it is very relaxing now. Some of the old building still exist.

  • Augest 66, company #490 MHayen BM1 co.commander

  • I was in boot 6-72 to 8-72. Company 188 all state from New Mexico (that's from the USA)

  • It was a fun day when our boot company got to go to the recruit.  I already knew all the crap like port, starboard and fore and aft and could already tie all the knots and stuff.  Kinda pissed off the instructor that I already knew it better than he did.

  • I was sent to work on the Recruit during our service week. We actually got maintenance duty instead of mess duty. They must have liked the work I was doing so they had me transferred there for the rest of my time as a recruit. I was in charge of other recruits sent to us for working parties and for setting up all the classes taught onboard the ship and the adjacent knot tying training installation. I also had to maintain all of the equipment and keep the ship clean and painted just like a real ship. They gave me a rank of recruit chief petty officer (RCPO). I still had to attend and pass all required recruit training in my spare time. I just didn't have to do "Close Order Drill" anymore. I did have to march my recruit working parties to and from the ship and to the mess hall. I was kept pretty busy and had a heavy responsibility but it helped me learn leadership, honor, and commitment. I hope they will paint the TDE-1 back on the ship and turn it into a historical museum. I attended basic training from November 1969 to February 1970.

  • trained on the recruit in 1961...company 434

  • Went aboard 1984 .....Company 033

  • Did my training aboard USS Recruit Aug-Oct 1968.  Glad it has not been destroyed, would like to see it again someday. Have not been back to NTC San Diego since I graduated, sad they shut the place down.  Would have been nice to wander around and relive the experience there.  Upon completion of boot camp, transferred to Balboa Naval Hosp for Hospital Corps training, graduated Feb-69, discharged Aug 1972, HM2.

Wonder what happened to all the great guys I went through boot camp with ... Steve Wisner, Albert Holiday from Detroit ... those were the days.

  • What good times! I was Company 153, July-September 1993. CC's were FC1 Murillo and SM1 Shaw. I'll Never forget those guys! When I first saw the USS Recruit, I couldn't wait to get on it, 20 years later....I WANT TO GET BACK ON IT! --HA!   --(she did look quite a bit different back then, then when I was aboard in 93')

USS Recruit museum effort. Sign on to show your support!

There are some of us on here that are determined to see to it that the TDE-1 is restored to it's glory days and continues to serve as a museum to all those that walked her decks! That effort requires the involvement of everyone that cares! If you went to basic or were stationed at San Diego, that means you!Currently, the Naval Sea Cadet Corp has entered into an agreement with the Corky McMillin Company, the developer of NTC. That agreement would give them use and control over the Recruit. They…
