Enlisted or not! This room is for everyone!

All are welcome to join this group!

I just thought there should be a place anyone who served at any time at any command could go and throw out a thought, ask a question or gripe!

  • During the Med Cruise w/USS FORRESTAL 64'-65' don't ever remember powerded eggs...powerded milk yes :(....Bug juice also..:(..one time when we were in port they were looking for people to help load a FRESH REAL MILK supply..all half pints and the 1-2 gallon that fit in the milk dispensers...as the carrier had to anchor out in the bay they were running 2 launches back and forth..we formed a line up the ladder to the hanger deck where the cartons were stacked on skids then taken to the elevator by pallet jacks....all was going just fine until someone dropped a half pint open carton down the ladder....and that was all it took...by the time the "milk war" was over the area around us was white..but the 2 launches kept comin and goin guessin we all were there for like maybe 3 hrs...

  • Maybe I served during one of the best periods in Naval history, but I have to stick up for our cooks. I have read some statements, from vets, saying they had powdered eggs etc.. In boot, in '59, we had real eggs....I know because I had to crack several cases of them on service week. The food was decent.  Aboard my Tin Can, we had good chow also. Later, in Japan, our base had plaques for most of the last twelve years there saying  "Best Mess Pacific "  The  Chow there as good as you could get in most palces in the States. We did, however, have to suffer through having some of the local girls bring us refills on drinks and food in the E5/E6 area of the mess hall. But..you gotta do what you gotta do..ha

  • If it was not for "stew burners" sailors would starve or would have to eat "c" rats - now a days they are mre's. I have to admit that boot camp food did suck. Brad you must have been a visionary - you must have become a MS thinking I can do better than this:) I have to admit that after boot that the chow hall, mess hall and finally the enlisted dining facility were improving in the quality of food - keep in mind I was in boot in 72 - definitely made alot of progress in 20 years. By the time I was on my first ship I was a 1st class (my 1st sea tour from 74-77 I was with the Marines - since I was a Corpsman). There was a 1st class mess on the Truxtun, we had the traditional head of line privilidge - normally I never took advantage of that. We did do time on the mess decks - like the Christmas Eve and Monte Carlo events. This was the 81-82 West Pac, the end of this cruise was amazing, since the Truxtun was nuclear powered, we got selected to represent the US at the Battle of the Coral Sea Celebration. We had the additional ports of Brisbane, Hobart, Tonga and Wellington - on the way back to San Diego we ate like kings, we had Australian beef and the mess decks had 5 gal containers of ice cream 24/7. We sent alot of that over the fan tail just before we re-entered territorial waters.

  • I was a stew burner from 83-2003.Served on USS John Young,Merrill,Kitty Hawk,Benfold,Princeton, and several San Diego Shore stations. Loved the enlisted mess. Many stories and fun times.

  • And here I thought was Oars... or was the liberty?  not sure anymore

  • SEE!!???  Told ya.....

  • They try to keep the tug opposite the shore side so it is not visible on her annual turnaround.

  • Tugboats.  It doesn't have any engines on board.

  • I want to ask a question, does anyone know how the USS constitution move with out sails when pictured?

  • We had an office chair on casters that we took turns on in rough weather.  Wasn't all that big of a thing.  That big ol' Repair ship bobbed around but nothing like a Tin Can.

We had to run from a typhoon that was coming up on Taiwan from the south one night, I was up on the signal bridge hanging on to the handrail with one hand and my hat with the other.  Whooping and a hollerin' to beat the band!  Ol' Hector was running all out and safeties were just about tied down to get her out of the way.  That was one night I remember quite well.

I'm wondering if we can use this forum and not have people get lost!

I have been informed by our CO, Mr Karr that these forums may work a little better than the "comments" section. So, I am going to try an experiment and see if we can do some house cleaning in this command! Excuse me! Sorry, I meant swab the deck!Somehow the comments have reversed themselves and the most recent comments show up at the end instead of the beginning. We have to be supportive of Doug these days as the site seems to be experiencing a growth spurt, which is good!
