I just thought there should be a place anyone who served at any time at any command could go and throw out a thought, ask a question or gripe!

  • I am sure it is all a matter of perspective and I am sure it was command specific. The 2 tours I did on the Truxtun - we had some great chow! We got to represent the US down under for the Battle of the Coral Sea week in 82. In Brisbane that ship loaded up with Australian beef, seafood I believe and ice cream. We had the 5 gal ice cream on the mess decks, we ate some steak and sea food. We also threw alot of that off the fan tail just before we re-entered US waters! The second time on the Truxtun we actually had cornish game hen and of course surf and turf - I guess as time goes on the chow gets better - can no longer say "eat it or starve" can not keep people on active duty with that attitude!

  • I guess mid rat quality is totally command dependent. But the ships I was on all had good mid rats. I remember hot dogs, sandwiches, chili, Mac and cheese, and the the Pt. Defiance a great spicy goulash.
  • I only had mid rats a few times.  Two slices of bread and some dried roast beef in between.  Didn't miss them one bit.

  • During the Cuban missle crisis, midrats was ham sandwiches with dried mustard and coffee. But at 0700 we had a great breakfast.
  • Only had mid rats at one command and that was at the hospital at Pendelton and it sucked! It was only sandwiches and cheese on every one - they did not know that people are lactose intolerant!

  • Peter H St Onge mentioned MidRats - what a flood of memories! I loved mid rats! Everyone welcome, great leftovers thrown together. I really remember great chili.
The Navy did feed us well, but mid rats always seamed like tasty fast food.
  • You did not offend me.  That place was called many things by thousands of people.  Squirrels, maggots, worms and many other creatures resided there over all the years it was in operation.

  • Sorry for offending you I was just being funny!!!! My time there it was called "worm island" Have yourself a nice day!

  • It was called "Squirrel Island", not "Chipmunk Island".

  • You can request to add commands, I have had one added and have two or three other requests pending. I was there during the same time, we were in the same battalion. We were not squirrels, we were just nervous chip munks, I was Alvin, I am sure you knew Simon and Theodore!

I'm wondering if we can use this forum and not have people get lost!

I have been informed by our CO, Mr Karr that these forums may work a little better than the "comments" section. So, I am going to try an experiment and see if we can do some house cleaning in this command! Excuse me! Sorry, I meant swab the deck!Somehow the comments have reversed themselves and the most recent comments show up at the end instead of the beginning. We have to be supportive of Doug these days as the site seems to be experiencing a growth spurt, which is good!
