  • Where is anyone? Anyone? Served 1963-1964. Can think of a few names...anyone remember Doris? Gal with very bumpy legs? Civ. Oh I see I'm the only one in the main room. Talking to myself I suppose

  • I transferred to Navcommsta Sfran - Stockton in 9/1963. RM2. From Naval Air Station Brunswick ME. In looking over my orders the yoeman discovered that my orders were short a year. I should have signed up for an additional 2 years. So my time ran about a year more. The base had the absolutely most fabulous chow hall any where in the Navy. Am I right? I had a very brief stint in the shore/ship CW room. I realized very quickly that my ground to aircraft CW skills were sadly lacking when it came to a sailor with a speed key. So after a few hours I flew out of the CW room, muttering that I couldn't take the berrating I received from radiomen on ships at sea! So, I became a tty operator. I worked in the classified area. Worked the Western Union msgs. That work was very amusing. You'd be surprised what wives sent their hubbies at sea messages. 11/1963 was the time President Kennedy was killed. Never forget. I was eating in the wonderful chow hall when the word came on a radio. Quickly got up and went back into the block house to see what I could do. We prepared messages to send to the fleet via RATT. Ships like submarines received their messages in CW via a tape. I wondered what the sailor did when he read the president was murdered. One cw signal at a time. Also there when a horrendous earthquake hit Alaska. Navcommsta Kodiak was down for a while. Then people were getting messages to Kodiak. Kodiak managed to send them to us and we called the families of Alaska with messages that their loved ones were okay. I guess around May-June 1964 shipped all the WAVEs to Treasure Island. I went to the Twelfth Naval District. Right downtown SFran. 12 hour watches. In August 1964 the Viet Nam war was officially declared. Was not a surprise to me since I was privy to messages coming into the classified area. In Dec 1964 I received an Honorable Discharge, an early out for Christmas. Loved Navcommsta Sfran - Stockton. I went to work as a civilian in Jan. 1965
