  • Richard C. Cox - I was on the Westpac cruise in '68. I can assure you we did NOT pull into DaNang Harbor, or any other port in Vietnam, during that cruise.

  • The bonnie dick is not the bonnie dick. When the yorktown was sink at the battle of the coral sea. The navy took the next carrier in line and renamed her yorktown read your history.

  • I don't remember the exact date, we had been at sea for a very long period, but we had a safety stand down day.  We pulled into DaNang Harbor about 1000 in the morning and dropped anchor so they could hold an awards ceremony on flight deck.  We were back at sea around 1400.  A very uncomfortable feeling that day.

  • Was aboard the Bonnie Dick 1961-1962 worked in Chaplains Office (X Division)

really enjoyed WestPac Cruise...I have tried to find out what happened to the Chaplain LCDR E. F. Ernst, CHC,USN  with no success.  If anyone reads this and know anything about him please let me know. RegionOhio@aol.com

  • I will have to double check, but I think it was '68, '69, '70

  • I was part of VA-94 and made 3 WESPAC tours on board.  Became shellback my first cruise on her.  Very proud ship she was, I really liked the time I spent there.  Good Liberty ports, she could actually tie up at pier in Singapore Navy base.  Lots of memories during those tours.  Water/showers but a fighting ship.

  • Went aboard the Bonnie Dick as part of VA-196 in 1964 & 1965, I was an aviation ordnance man. Made the good will tour, "The Concord Squadron" to Madagascar, Kenya and Aden in '64, we then were back in the South China Sea when the war officially started in August 1964.

I am in touch with several squadron and shipmates, my best wishes to all of you who I served with !

I have lots of 8MM home movies I made on the 2 cruises, someday I'll get around to having them put on DVDs to share with anyone who is interested. Remember becoming Shellbacks on the way to Africa, crossing the Equator...?  I have footage of us pollywogs kissing the Royal Baby's big stomach, and more....

Interesting note to ad to Charles Vena's note about his Dad building the ship, one of my aunts was dating a guy who built it, or family lived in New Jersey, about 20 miles from Brooklyn, small world !
