  • As part of the nuclues crew I boarded the Newman K Perry about 3 weeks before it was comissioned at Orange,Texas.  The commisioning was on July 26, 1945 and afterwards we sailed down the Sabine River ; stopped in Galveston to take on ammo, and then headed to Gitmo for the shakedown. I attended atomic warfare training there, and in August the A-bombs were dropped on Hiroshima/Nagasaki bringing the war toi a close.  We had a brief assignment on the East Coast, Charlkeston, New York, Miami ; back to Gitmo, and then through the Panama Canal; San Diego, Honoluu and arrived in Tokyo in Oct. 1945.  Courier duty in Japan took us to many port cities there  and we returned to Honolulu in April, 1946 just about the time the big tidal wave swept over Hilo on the big Island.  I was transferred to the Henry W. Tucker there and after repairing their Griscom/Russel distillers headed to San Diego for discharge and then home. The Perry was a remarkable experience.  George F. Pless

  • Welcome Aboard Paul. Looks like you served aboard not long after I had left. Was stationed in Spain when you were onboard.

  • Welcome aboard Michael. When was your Dad stationed aboard the Perry?
