  • I was sent on to San Juan for the Blockade.I spent 22 months in San Juan.I was not stationed at Gitmo.
  • Kenneth, I was in Gitmo a little before you.  I was there from 1960-62.  Being, a Gitmo vet, you might want to consider attending one of our annual reunions.  This year we are meeting in Buffalo, NY from August 23-27th.  Let me know.
  • I was a Radioman stationed in San Juan PR during the Cuban Missle crisis.I was pulled from class at Radioman A School in Bainbridge MD along with some classmates and flown to Gitmo on two hours notice. We were sent to beef up the communications net,Two weeks later the blockade went into effect.
  • Mike, God Bless you and all the other veterans who feel the same way.
  • I served aboard the USS Francis Hammond FF-1067 and the USS Vreeland FF-1068 in the capacity of a Sonar Technician during the years 1982-1986. I saw the world and many other things that made me really know what it was to be an American and the freedom that was our privilege. Made many good friends and lost a few as well. I truly miss those days and do not regret serving my country.
  • I served aboard USS Roanoke CL-145 from 55 to 58.  I was a YN in the Captain's Office.  Great duty.  Worked for several captains, but the absolute best was John Chew.  WWII hero and all, great personality, considerate.  Before he reached mandatory retirement age in 69 he'd become VAdm.

  • Jeffrey, my son, Mike, was also on a Fast Frigate.  He was on the Truett (FF1095) from 1982-86, and also was on quite a few Med cruises.
  • Jeffrey, you can go back you know! I did and at 55 at that! I know you are in Iowa. But, have a look at the conversation in "Navy Hospital Corpsman" between
    Randall Hunter and I.
  • I served on board the USS Vreeland FF-1068 from 84-87 during the Cold War tracking subs all over the Atlantic and Med. It was a very interesting time in my life and miss those days when at the time all I wanted was out.
