Any Navy Veteran who served from 2-Sept.-1945 to 26-Dec-1991, prevented World War III for 46 years. We must never forget those who did pay the Ultimate price with their lives. USS Scorpion SSN-589, and many others. I Salute your Bravery.....

  • I came in about the time Reagan declared Russia the evil empire and started building 500 ship Navy, when it was finally over and the Berlin was was torn down. Me and a couple of guy asked ourselves what going to happen next. Behold the 1st Iraq war, 911, War terror,Afghanistan
2nd Iraq war, and next a bankrupt country. Just like the craftmenship rating in the Navy such as IM,ML,MR,PM, and OM; which were either merged with other rates or done away with. We are also seeing these same thing happening outside Navy to in the civilian sector. I personnally don't believe we ever one the "cold war", but slowly merged into something that some of us don't like, or don't want to face.
  • James, I commend you for your research and knowledge of ratings and their evolution. Years ago, I often wondered about "BuPers."
  • I will use these sites for shopping and will pass on to all my shipmates. Thanks

  • It's pretty neat. I've been stationed in places where the bases dated back to WWI or Korea, small bases and it's interesting to see the history of the area at the time. At least it's a nice tool for piecing military sites.
  • That's a great site thanks. I'm not in the field but it's cool to see areas of my home town and other places I've traveled to over the years.
  • Jim, yes I went to GLakes for HCS, I was prolly too damn cold most of the time to remember much of it. LOL, I did teach HCS @ San Diego for awhile though. As I recall, we didn't teach much of the history of the Corps at that time. Too bad too. Thanks for the refresher!

Ronald, as was answered by others, you were perfectly correct in saluting with your left hand, per Navy Regulations. I also have my Flag illuminated and it gets changed at least yearly on Flag Day.

Michael, ya damnit you're right, DTs did seem to have the prettier women. What the heck is it with girls and teeth? Well now that the rates combined, they ALL get to be HMs.

Lastly, James, I guess it depends on which side of the aircraft the 'shooter' is standing. Not being a true Airdale, I couldn't say for sure.

    thnx all

Have a great day today and a better tomorrow.

  • I'm glad I was a "Mate" an Electrician's Mate, It may be just me, but the DT's seem to have better looking Women than HM's. Just saying...
  • Right. The ol Blue Jacket Manual sez: Alway use your right hand. If your right arm is injured or so encumbered as to delay your salute too long, you may use your left hand for saluting.( The Army and Air Force never salute with the left hand; the Navy and Marine Corps do so when neccassary.)
  • Randall, (See David Reigle comment) I have the same problem in Boynton Beach, Fl with people flying the flag 24/7 and letting it fade to a point that it's hard to see the colors. If you fly the flag at night you have to have a light shinning on it. I have a saluting story. In 1966 my ship (DD-872) went to Freeport Texas for Texas Navy Day. Me a a couple of friends went to the Astro Dome to watch a ball game. My right hand was in a cast. We uncovered when we went in but covered and saluted during the National Anthem, I saluted with my left hand. Right or wrong?
  • Randall, I just determined it was because you went to Great Lakes that you didn't get the history! Maybe if you went to HCS in San Diego you might have remembered!
    Kidding!
