  • DFM =Diesel Fuel Marine

  • We actually used DFM, also called F76 if I recall.  We could use JP5 but that was jet fuel on the carrier I served on.

  • I was one 2 ships during the ND conversion.  In fact, the second one (USS MITSCHER DDG-35) was the only ship in the Navy that converted to ND and had to convert back to NSFO.  We couldn't burn ND!!!

  • WHEN I WAS ON THE BLUE RIDGE (70-74), THE FIRST YEAR AND A HALF OR SO WE USED NSFO, THEN WE SWITCH TO "NAVY DISTILLATE" FUEL. JP5 AND SOME OTHER PETROL MIX. THAT CONVERSION WAS GREAT - EXTENDED OUR BOILER FIRESIDE AND WATERSIDE CLEANING HOURS.

  • We always burned fuel oil. If I recall it was referred to as Bunker-C. I didn't know JP-5 was later used in place of fuel oil.
  • Black Oil (NSFO) is what we used at first and than switched to JP5

  • JP5 was still better than dealing with the Black Oil (NSFO), which they say was better than the days of coal!

  • Burnerman always had that fuel (JP5)) smell & soot eyeliner!! Damn!, light;n fires was was great!! BTC(SW) Kevin W. we lit'd a lot of them!!!!! 84-88!! RK

nsfo sucked f-76 was pretty good burning jp-5 you could burn but superheater temps woud be higher and it did burn cleaner but was expensive to burn in a boiler and we made ourown overloads on the coral sea drilled out some 11s and made 9s for full power runs and wartimeuse. Steaming an m-type with no abc"s was a real challenge but it made the watch go by fast.
