  • The old cock fight arena burned down along time ago,I went there once and was amazed that they cooked the losers on the BBQ as you walked out.

  • There was an open farmers market where you could buy fish heads and rice.lol Just up the street was a real swanky hotel where I used to get shrimp fried rice and drank southern comfront over ice and listened to live piano music. On up the street was the cock fighting arena.

  • Rizal Circle,Olongapo means "Head of Old Man"3439411011?profile=original

  • 3439411126?profile=originalHere is a picture of the Magsaysay circle today.

  • Dan,that area is now being built into a huge shopping mall, between the river and the first street on the right(Gordon Ave),I will get some pics when back that way right now in AC.

  • Kevin & Dan, I seem to remember a large outdoor market that was beyond that "round about" at the end of Magsaysay Dr.  Scuttlebutt had it that there was a black market operating there where one could get way more than the legal exchange rate.  But It was also believed that counterfeit bills might have been involved too.  I remember the bar owners were always examining the bills for authenticity.  Then I think there was a time when Marcos "floated" the peso exchange rate?  Not sure what that accomplished, or purpose.  But the exchange rate shot up to double the previous rate.  So did the price of San Miguel beer.  That was toward the end of my tour at Subic in '70.
Remember the Valentine Club?  It was kind of a hangout for the hospital corpsmen stationed there.  I also remember those standard black umbrellas that everyone carried during the rainy season.  And how a lot of Magsaysay Dr. turned into mud, and that only those little motor bikes with the side cars, could transverse.  Those were a trip to ride in lol.

  • Wow, seems like inflation has caught up. While I was there in 69' it was seven to one. If ya had a hundred bill you could get ten to one around the corner to the right after crossing over shite bridge. Had a great dude for exchange. Never got any funny money in two years of dealing.

  • Adrian,my girl and I ate for 890p the exchange rate now here is 43p to 1 usd, so that was right around 20 dollars, the owner is an American he owns a place in Thai land too,I posted on FB under Tequila Reef Cantina Angeles City, check it out,as well as my pictures here.

  • Kevin,
Hmm.  Looks like prices have gone up a tad since I was there.  ₱590 eh?  Let me check my wallet.

    Umm-
It appears I'm a little short of pesos.  I'll have to go to the money exchange.  By the way, what's the exchange rate these days?  I'd be interested to know what a Filipino/Mexican/American turkey dinner would taste like.
I remember one time in Singapore, '71, me a buddy came upon an A&W hamburger restaurant during our wanderings.  Being homesick for those great burgers and root beer, we went in and ordered the works.  Everything tasted awful!  We discretely spit our first bites into napkins and left.  Later we ate at a little outdoor eatery that offered a very tasty wok dinner.  Eating with chop sticks, very comically, to the amusement of the other diners.

Subic/Olongapo 1990-91

I'm doing some research and would appreciate feedback from those who were station dito at Cubi or SRF in 1990-91. Personally, I was there in the early 80's so much of my recollection is irrelevant for what I am looking for.  1. Bars and hotelsWhat memorable bars and hotels were around at that time? I remember a few from my time, but I'm sure they were long gone. 2. The JungleWas this still a thing in 90-91? Anyone remember bars from there? 3. SR FenceWhen did the fencing go up on the bridge…

What is in Subic and Angeles now.

I am living in Angeles City and have lived here for about 7 years. There have been many many changes BUT... It's still the same Philippines.Have not been down to Olongapo for about a year. The base is still recognizable as a former U.S. Base but it has been its all commercial now.I even have a friend of mine on the base. He is Japanese American and he runs a company making solenoids. There is almost nothing in Olongapo proper that is fun entertainment wise.Barrio Barretto still has many bars,…
