  • Wow Ann and Bruce, I hay have had the pleasure of meeting you all.  I was in Peronnel from very late '77 (December) through '79. Bruce, did you know a Chief Moffett at TI?

Ann, I knew pretty much everyone at the Dispensery.

  • The Hospital Corpsmen that were stationed there in the 1970's just had their 37th anniversary in Branson, Mo. I have to say it was a big success.
  • Hi, Paul Hosse - I rotated thru TI in the late 70's through the early 90's for schools at the Oakland Army Base. Great place and at least we didn't have to pay for the greatest view in San Francisco.

  • I passed thru TI Sept 1950. the food was terrible, greatly improved the farther i go away from the states.  While waiting for orders was put in work parties, one was in the bilges of a yard oiler, scraping up gunk in a confined area which was scarey..  While at muster for work parties a old timer said do what i do, so when they asked who needs special pay he raised his hand so did i, they picked the highest ranked and had us march off to the dispersing office, but most disappeared before getting there.  We would go to the snack bar or just stay out of sight.  I also got sent to the chiefs club because i could run a buffer.  i buffed the floors and would play the slot machines as i passed by.  enjoyed liberty in Frisco and Oakland, especially in the international settlement.  One guy we went on liberty with just got paid, he had about $600.00 we went to the Gay Nineties and these girls flocked to our table.  when we were leaving he wanted to stay as one girl was going to take him, we saw him the next morning and he was broke and didn't where the money. went  We went  to a bar in China town and the bartender told us not to hussle a beautiful Chinese girl at the bar as it was the owners wife, from that point on the drinks were on the house.  Went on Liberty with a marine and a sailor, the Marine took us to a Marine nite club called the Marine memorial, it was at the top floor of a tall building downtown Frisco.  It was really a great club, I was never able to find it again.

  • When were you stationed at TI Bruce? I was there during the mid 70's.

  • Had the good fortune to spend several occasions at T.I. over the years while going to classes at the Navy Transportation Management School at the Oakland Army Base. Remember the cold barracks but most of all the great view of San Francisco. We had a view that the civvies never got to see for the most part. The Chief's Club by the water gave the ultimate viewing pleasure at night... a sight they made post cards out of. Great memories and hated to see it "given away." Glad I can say I got toexperience T.I.

  • I transferred from the USS Yorktown, CVS-10 in 64 as an ABE2 to convert to electronics tech. After one year in ET A school I came out as an ET-2. I went to the USS Zelima AF-49 for one year. Making ET-1 cut that tour short so I came back to Treasure Island to teach for 3 years at ET A-school. We lived in base housing and it was pretty nice. I made ETC while on that tour. It seems like I had a part-time job the whole time I was there. I worked as a "Rent-A-Cop", a marine electrician at a shipyard, and as a floor manager at the EM club. While at the club the manager got transferred to Mare Island so I was the acting  manager until they hired another one The new guy was an alky so they let him go. The next one was also a drunk. I could not officially take the managers job because I was in the Navy. It was a fun part-time job and sometimes a guy would have way too much fun. Somehow I made it through that tour intact. Sure hated to see the base close up. It was good duty and S.F. was a beautiful city with a lot to see.

  • I was stationed at T.I. twice.  In 1961 I went to ETA School and in 1965 I went to ETB School.  While in ETB School, I lived off-base in Oakland.  They gave us a book of 30 passes to get across the bridge.   I lived on MacArthur street and the house next to us was occupied by the notorious Oakland Hells Angels.  I finally got to meet one of them last year at a Harley dealer.  He started the whole thing. His name was Sonny Barger.  My wife and I would drive to T.I. at night to go to the movies at the Basilone Theater.  I recall paying 10 cents for the movie and 10 cents for popcorn.

  • I was stationed at Treasure Island from late 1980 to May of '82 as Mechanical Branch Head, Unrep. school. Heck of an assignment for a Nuc Sub Machinist Mate.Had never seen an inhaul / outhaul winch let alone a tensioning ram. Horrible learning curve.

The Chief's club was the most fantastic place on the base. Have a beer at the bar with the best view imaginable. It's sad to drive past it now going into or leaving S.F. knowing it's no longer a haven for the American Blue Jacket.

  • I was at Treasure Island towards the end of the year in 1990 for DC "A" school.  We marched all over the place there during the day, and I was always broke so we drank beer at the bowling alley on base when we ran out of money in San Francisco.

Treasure Island Beer Machines

I was processed out of the Navy there in Jan 1972.  Stayed in a transit barracks for a week or so while waiting to be discharged.  When I first arrived I kind of just hung around base a day or so until I joined a few guys who were cool and we went downtown SF looking for hippie chicks.  But one evening while staying on base I wandered into the barracks lounge to watch TV or something.  And to my surprise I saw a beer dispensing machine in there.  I couldn't believe it.  A beer machine in a…
