  • In 1972, I was an RM2 on RADM McCauley's staff in Charleston SC.  The Admiral approached me and told me he wanted me to accompany him on a Top Secret mission.  Of his staff of 200, he selected 5 officers and myself and we flew out in the middle of the night in the CNO's A3 converted jet.  We eventually made it to Pearl Harbor and then on to Cubi Point aboard an Air Force C5A loaded with mine sweeping gear.  This was the beginning of the plan to create Operation End Sweep.  I stayed with the group for nine months,  several of which were spent aboard the USS New Orleans.  During that period, we swept the inland coastal waterways and Haiphong Harbor while the Admiral negotiated terms of the Peace Treaty.   It was an exciting time and one I'll never forget!

  • I was a BT on the USS Worden DLG 18 in Feb. 1973. During that month we served as the flagship for Radm. McCauley. I remember the North Vietnamese officials came aboard to negotiate the mine clearing ops.

  • I was on LPH-11 for the sweep detail.I was a Radarman and then we were called OS, Operations Specialist.I remember staring at the  NV gunboats as they circled us.We spent i believe 55 days up there and a friend of mine even went overboard to break the boredom. His Name was Tooker.I'm Jim Madigan

  • I was in V-1 Div, FLT DK LPO Onboard the USS New Orleans LPH 11. and was sent TAD to USS Ogden LPD 5 when their Air Dept refused to go to work. Myself and 4 Men from the Orleans went over to help the Ogden during Flight Ops.

  • I enjoyed my time on the New Orleans.  It was well-run and organized and ship's company was always friendly and helpful.  And the food was MUCH better than later on the Tripoli.

  • RADM Brian McCauley was Commander, Task Force 78. Embarked on USS New Orleans and, later, USS Tripoli, the task force cleared mines (laid by aircraft from the USS Coral Sea in November and December 1972) in Haiphong Harbor, Vinh coastal area and inland waterways. I was part of TF 78 staff with COMOMCOM under Capt. Felix Vecchione. Anybody remember the old Mofo??? (ha)

My name is Brad Matthews, I  was on the Tripoli from August of 72 until August of 73, I was attached to S-7 as DP Tech, but also served as Mess Decks Master at Arms and later as a Master at Arms under the Chief Master at Arms ( a very large Hawiian Master Chief who's name I cannot remember).Since our government was somewhat lax in keeping records, my records don't indicate that the Tripoli replaced the New Orleans as REAR ADM McCauly's Flag Ship in June of 73 and that the Tripoli was located in…

I was an aircrewman during Operation End Sweep. At the time I worked in the MCM (Ordenance ) shop rigging our planes with minesweeping gear at night and flying minesweeping missions during the day. I went home for 14 days on emergency leave and arrived back to the squadron in time to volunteer for our next campaign in Hyphong Harbor. Following End Sweep I deployed to the Med for Operations Nimbus Star and Nimbus Moon, clearing mines from the Suez Canal in 74 & 75.
