  • We all did it with dignity and pride in my day. The Truxtun - the CGN version had safety observers - if they told you to stop and you did not - you were going to "Mast" No one ever went to "Mast" - guess the policy worked and no one was injured.

  • AMEN,BRO.

  • Yes! Pipe Neptune and Davy Jones onboard march all the Wog's to the flight deck.Kiss the king's belly, lay in Davies coffin"face down" all in good fun? I did it and proud of it. USS America 1972

  • But when it all ended, and after a clean shower,a brand new SHELLBACK CARD with my name was waiting on me on my pillow on my rack. And like you said,David KING,...IT AIN'T NO THING.But I felt proud of it when I was transferred to another tin can,and showed it to some ...greasy,slimy,low life POLLYWOGS.They stood in awe...I felt proud.

  • Scraped knees and ruined boondockers!!  But, ain't no thing.....

  • The bottom line is and was, it was done in good fun and was not intended to injure anyone. Some scrapped knees were acceptable!

  • Hi,Dave...I know where you're coming from on this, but believe me,these guys could really "get revenge"   legally...I know from first-hand experience, because on the night before we crossed,I was in a group of "WOGS" who KNEW what was coming the next day to us,and we disguised our faces, took up our "SHILLEIGLLEYS" ( unsure of spelling) and handed out our own brand of : retaliation" for what we were about to receive the next day...And,boy,did we get it!!..I will NEVER for get that day!

  • James, yeah.  When we crossed on my one and only ship, I was the Division Officer.  Four of my division were shellbacks.  I told them not to give me preferential treatment, but I believe they did.  I wish they would not have, but there it is.

  • Back in my day  ( '59)  no one but the skipper was spared,if they just happened to be a pollywog! We were allowed to WACK-A WOG!! But,fortunately common sense prevailed when it came to our XO,Division officer,CPO,& etc...We kinda handled those guys with kid cloves, know what I;m sayin...

  • We only wacked em with a light touch :) Now a days I hear crossing the line has gone away just like CPO iniations.
