After we arrived in Australia & went on Liberty, none of the Aussies would let us pay any money for anything we wanted to buy...it was a all free.Even the young ladies who made up the "welcoming committee" were kind of extra "friendly" to us...This action was in appreciation of our troops from WW11 saving them from the Japanese Army...I think every sailor on board the ship fell in love with a TRUE LOVE down there.
Tom, I was there for that crossing, I was one of the shell backs. Didn't do much but when I saw a Lt that I knew I had to go and give him one hell of a swat on the rump!, he turned and I saluted him.. Next couple of weeks were a bit rough but I made it through ok.. LT Stills was just one of those officers that wanted his way no matter if it was right or wrong. Explaining your position was a waste of time. But I loved working on the Teletype, He made me routine all of the teletypes we had, then sent me off to a couple of other ships to do theirs too. Throw me into the briar patch..
AMEN,Jeff!
I became a Shellback during Apollo 11, aboard the USS Hornet CVS-12. On July 15th, 1969. What a blast............
