  • I remember very shortly before we actually approached the equator,we saw a water spout about 1/4 th mile off to starboard,it about blew everybody's mind...We didn't expect to see something like that...The Quartermasters called it a  "YOUNG" waterspout, whatever that is.

  • 2 Nov 91. USS PELELIU LHA-5

  • Became a Shellback in 1970 after our 1st Vietnam tour aboard the USS Wainwright DLG-28. Did a little liberty in Subic Bay, then back to Vietnam through 1971.

  • I crossed aboard the DESTROYER  U.S.S. JAMES E.KYES  (  DD-787 ) back in the great year of  1959.The ole " Jumpin' Jimmy,as the Aussies called her, made a name for herself in Nam,on the firing line. She won many "E" ratings proudly, and wore it proudly. One of her gunners lost his life trying to protect the crew of his boat, and later another U.S.Navy ship was named after him.

  • My 1st time across the line was in 82 on the USS Truxtun CGN35, we started out on the foward - crawled on hands and knees to the flight deck. Very proud to have done that, in 86 and 88 I was back on the Truxtun and was the Royal Doctor. Now a days the Royal Doctor's Wog Wacker can be seen on my page or it can be seen in person on the USS Salem. I hear that now the ceremony has turned into a "flight deck" picnic, seems some commands pushed the limits and sailors were injured. On the Truxtun for the 86 and 88 West Pacs we had safety observers - they had a big red s on their tee shirt and they told you to stop and you did not - you were headed for Captain's Mast. All three ceremonies were conducted in good fun and no one had more of an injury then bruised knees. I have heard that Chief's Iniations have gone in the same direction - two traditions that have been lost due to those who wanted to disobey the rules and wanted to potentially to injure a "Shipmate!" That is why these traditions are gone!

  • Ah yes, crossing the line.  I remember drawing a big P on a tee shirt the night before the initiation.  And the following morning enjoying the royal breakfast.  An interesting concoction of unknown ingredients.  Crawling on hands and knees with summons in mouth, up to the hanger deck.  Wearing our clothing inside out, lol.  Being whacked on the butt with sections of fire hose, lol.  What an experience to remember.  Glad I became a Shellback.
