Actually, the Ranger is at Puget Sound N.S. THe old gal will be making its way to Fairhaven, Oregon to become a museum. I think the opening is scheduled for May 2014. http://www.ussranger.org
Peter, sorry that USS Bon Homme Richard CV-31 was scrapped in 1992 at the San Pedro shipyards in California. The carriers mothballed up there now are the Ranger, Indy, Kitty Hawk and Connie.
Richard - I think "Frenchie" rings a bell, but remember, that was 44 years ago. I was so young then, I hadn't even developed common sense.
I got an invitation to the decommissioning, when Bonnie Dick retired, but I was flying in a VP outfit by then and we were deployed to Rota, so I couldn't go. I think she's still in Bremerton. Anybody know for sure?
Richard,
Negative regarding "Frenchie." I was a BT on the USS Ranger and didn't get to know any of the non-engineering folks.
to Peter D. Lister: I first crossed the equator on the Bon Homme Richard at the same time you did. By the way, Did you know AO1 "Frenchie"? (real name Lachappelle)
I crossed the line on 7-July-1976 @ 105 Deg 57 Min 5 Sec. I guess you could say crossing the equator was my bicentennial celebration. I spent 4-July-1976 in port steaming in Singapore. I would have to say, enduring the line crossing ceremony was one of the most unique experiences of my life. I guess that's what happens when you let 5,800, 20 somethings execute a time honored tradition.
That Shellback Rum sure does look inviting.
This is fantastic and Great. To bad they could not issue this when we became ShellBacks. I have the Coca Cola right now. Have a Great Day.
Found this for sale. I think one should present their Shellback card upon purchase. No wogs allowed.
Crossed in 1989 aboard USS Camden(AOE-2)...then several times after.
Barking for Flipper, "Setting Yoke", playing "Wog-Pong"...ah, memories!
AO3 Pete Lister - Crossed aboard Bon Homme Richard, WG Division, bomb elevator maintenace crew, after leaving Singapore, summer of '68. Don't recall the exact date. I'll have to check with Tiffany Publishing.
