  • I was there Nov 1992 to March 1993.  Loved it!

  • I just found my old Naval School of Health & Science class grad picture.  March, 1985. there were probably only 20 of us.  it was during the time that the new Naval Hosp San Diego was being built so our class rooms were in temp portable buildings. It sure was fun.

  • Hello Corps School Graduates San Diego, I was with company 27-68 and we graduated the 15th of April of 1968 and I too have many memories of the facility. Our barracks were at the bottom of the hill so we got to walk up the hill every morning and sometimes for haircuts. I have some pictures of the original facility.  You all know that most of what we remember is all gone now.  My shipmate Mike and I went and toured as much as we could of the area in planning for a company reunion. In October of 2008 we held a reunion in San Diego with 8 of our number.  It was sort of rushed since I contracted and was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in July 2008. We had been granted a tour of the new medical facility with one of the Master Chiefs.  When we got there we found three chiefs and members of the staff from HM-3 to HM-1 equal to our number.  We went to one of the floors and they had set up a poster with our Company number and a welcome from the staff. Toured the whole hospital including part of the Grey Ghost which is staff barracks and rehab for wounded warriors. Amazing facility. We were taken to an auditorium where we were able to give a short Power Point presentation I had prepared.  We had expected 20-30 people to attend.  There was over 350 people there and we had a welcome from the XO and the Chief of staff. We were all given name badges, and collector coins from San Diego and the new training facility in Texas. During our presentation we listed all our graduates and a hand waived from the back of the room.  The Corpsman had spotted his dads name listed on our roster.  We had not been able to find him until this moment. His son was a HM-2 on a short class TAD at that very time. At the end of the presentation every person came through and shook all of our hands.

Several of our corpsmen remarked later that this day was the best day of their lives.  It was interesting to visit NTC also and stand by the USS Recruit next to the grinder that just 45 years before we had been marching on, was now filled with pizza places, hamburger places, hair places, real estate offices, etc.

The Naval Hospital San Diego was definately one of the building blocks of my life and I miss seeing all those memories again.

  • I just made a visit to my old duty station Naval Hospital Ornaldo. Its more active now as a VA hospital than it was as a Naval Hospital.  Everything was trhe same.  They only changed the paint color and pulled up the carpet for tile.

It was nice to see the old place again.

  • Attended "A" School May - Sept. '72, Company 47-72, then sent to NavHosp Guam.  I can still picture one of the nurse instructors cluelessly holding out an unrolled "finger cot" during a lecture; the laughter was deafening!

  • Jim,

Do it. I would love to help with the Iowa project.

  • John you may have given me my TB shot before I went to Vietnam. I liked the courtyard that was behind the admin. building. We made ambulance runs to intensivecare; mostly to pickup deceased persons and take them to the morgue. The admiral didn't think it would be nice to push them on a gurney through the hospital.
