  • Charles Harris, nope we graduated a few months before, with the war still going on in Vietnam and interactions in Cambodia still going on as well.....we were glad that most of us were given duty stations other then Southeast Asia....although I heard the class before ours was not so fortunate....those were the days....

  • Hey Richard, for a second I thought that was my class which graduated in Nov of 73, we had a different nurse corps officer: her name was Beebe

  • Here's a copy of my Basic Hospital Corps School Class photo 45B-73, Aug. 30, 1973. I'm on the right, three rows from the bottom, first guy in wire frame glasses.

  • How many Hospital Corpsman remember the old baby blue Nursing Manual we received in Hospital Corps School...I hear it came in a light green version as well...those were the days

  • Jim Decota I'm with you....the politicians got involved and they tore down old Hospital Corps School facility at Balboa in San Diego and now they are trained at the combined service (Army, Air Force and Navy) Medical Education and Training Campus (METC) facility at the Joint Base, Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX as of the 21st of April 2011,,,,going forth into the 21st century and beyond...I don't like it as well but the BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure) bill keeps chewing up old facilities and spitting out what's left....What's next FMSS (oh sorry it's FTSB don't want to be politically incorrect) down the street? Wouldn't surprise me.... oh well.....
  • Jim, Thanks for the reply. I see that you started when I was gone. I graduated in July of '72. I am beginning to remember more and more about the place. Our barracks was located below the helicopter pad in one of those old storage buildings. They were "H" type buildings capable of housing 4 companies. We had to clean one out to be able to move in since the dorm building was completely full. Later another company moved into one of the sections (45-72 perhaps). The location was out of the way, nobody bothered us down there in the hole, and it was close to the Rx Club! My former post I mentioned Krauth Memorial library, it was a memorial library but not the name Krauth. Maybe that will come back to me some day. Nice to take a walk back "memory lane" once in a while.

  • Walt, I know the feeling! I had to go into the "attic of the mind" to remember those days! Including the dates since it was actually 25A-73. We started in December 72. Instead of fire watch, I was 'lucky' to be able to wash and wax the floors of the almost empty supply buildings that were at the bottom of the hill! However, a lot of those memories came rushing back when I donned the uniform again and kind of returned to it all. I joined the veteran crew on a museum ship here in Albany, NY. It seems one thing they have been lacking is Corpsmen! With the rest of our crew being in their senior years ( I guess we are also) and the hazards that are present for the touring public, I wind up actually serving the role I was trained for back at Balboa! You might recognize the two Commanding Officers in the photo though!

  • Thanks for the reply. I find it difficult to remember all the details of the place. I remember spending duty days at the Krauth Memorial Library (I believe that was the name) checking out books. Fire watch around a three story building that was vacant. Some other things come back little by little. I suppose I'll have to go to the attic and dig and see if I have any pictures left. I see Jim although we weren't in the same company you were there  about the same time I was?Again, thanks for the reply!

  • Welcome aboard Walt from an alum of 25A-72! I forget why we got the letter A added! The place looks very different now. It has been a lot of years! But, it did form us pretty well I think! If you use Bing maps and their "bird's eye view" you can fly around the place and see what it looks like these days! Be prepared though. All those stucco buildings are gone now!

  • Hi fellow Corpmen. I am new to this log and still trying to learn my way around it. I was in company 39-72. From the pictures posted I hardly reconize the place. Even the old pic doesn't look familiar. Just goes to show me its been a lot of years since I was there.
