  • My ship [USS Barnstable County [LST-1197} said first to Port Said the middle of 1974 to start Operation Nimbus Star, Nimbus Moon In the clearing out of thr Suez Canal after Egypt and Iseral had a little rukus and stopped up the Canal whth a bunch of sucken ships, barges, and heavy equipment. The Barn anchored in Lake Timsah in Ismailia. While anchored there were couldnt find to much to do and because of the laws in Egypt we had to be GOOD. We started our own scoccer team, baseball teams and to have a place to relax, we found an abandonded building, cleaned it out, scrounged up a couple of pool tables, made a bar, got up some volunteer bartenders, ran out the thousands of lizards and opened up the Lizard LOUNGE. the only place with cold beer and cokes in the area. We had a lot of hard work good clean fun and a satisfying job. We left the last of 1974 and after several stops we returned to Little Creek, Va and our families. I few weeks later I ended my navy career.
  • To all who sailed through the Suez Canal after 1974, you're welcome. After the minesweeping detail in North Vietnam, the Mine Warfare Force was deployed from Charleston to sweep the mines in the Suez Canal that were left over from previous altercations in the region. We cleared from Port Said to Port Suez. Lived in Ismailia on Lake Timsah (about halfway down the canal). Worked out of the Suez Canal Port Authority Building when I was attached to the Mobile Mine Countermeasures Command (MOMCOM).
