  • Joined MCB-62 in Gulfport, Mississippi in July 1969,  Capt John P Jones in command.  Being a UT2, I was attached to Bravo Co and by March we were on our way to Dong Ha in the Pearl of the Orient just 6 clicks South of the DMZ. .  Main objective was to build the Dong Ha bridge on Rte 1 and was completed just prior to our departure in late 1969.   Got back to states just after hurricane Camille spread havoc on the Gulf coast. Wooden barracks I stayed in before departure was not there when we returned.   It certainly was a memorable part of my career.  Was honorably discharge in Gulfport and put my active duty to rest.   Wish all my mates well and intend to create an album in the future of old Dong Ha pictures that I took.

  • I was never attached to this battalion, however, I did enjoy the First Class Living Room's hospitality on Diego Garcia in the spring of 82. I still have my drink ticket, if I ever get back to DG I have four drinks coming to me. I was on the Truxtun and we did a tender availability for about a week or so.

The last cruise....DET SUBIC

Even though I was a Fleet Sailor I enjoyed my times in the Sea Bees. But my last deployment I was sent to Det Subic because they were short a SK and I did MS records keeping so I got to go. Boy talk about the luck of the draw. We wasn't buying enough Cruise Books. And Alpha Co. Did a deal with the USMC. And the OIC found out and turned it into a deal for buying Cruise Books. Heck I bought two. Call me some time and I fill you in on the details.  Jim
