I too served 2 tours aboard Simon Lake from 1971 to 1975, then again from early 1979 thru mid-1980. I agree, that Rota, Spain was beautiful, and is also where my daughter was born. Unique to have a child with dual citizenship...also a little challenging when it came to getting official documents. Looking forward to finding and reconnecting with former shipmates in the W-4 Division. I was in Missile Guidance Checkout on the 4th deck Missile Magazine area!
I was on the Lake from 92-95. After we finished a yard period in Portsmouth we made our way to La Maddelena Italy, I very much enjoyed my time on the Lake and La Maddelena was the best port I was ever stationed in.
Roger. I was on there from '71 until the Holland Left Rota. I swapped duties with ML3 Nick Smith and sailed back to Charleston. That was a beautiful place in Rota.

Came onboard July of 1984 in Kings Bay. Assigned to R6 Carpenter Shop. Great crew, Great ship. Departed from Charleston after GTMO in December of 1986. HT3 Jim Hyde
I was on the Simon Lake at goose creek S.C. 1977 to 1979. We steamed to Guantanamo bay for trials. I was a BT-2. We did a boiler overhaul underway, what an experience.
I was on board the Simon Lake from 1975 to 1979. Was a data processor but never worked in that department. Worked in repair office with the ARRS team. At the time was the only Seaman in navy to be on that team. Was on Simon Lake while in Rota, Spain and rode her back to Charleston. Was in the yards during refit and in Gitmo for shake down cruise. Served on her until 1979 which was the end of my enlistment. Loved Spain and am still in Charleston all these years later.
I was on board the Simon Lake in OPS dept (radio shack) in 70, picking her up in the yards at Bremerton, rode her to Charleston and we then went to GITMO for refresher training and I stayed on board until we went to Rota and I cross decked to the Holland. I was a RM1
Was on the uss hunley 69 to 71. Then went to the uss simon lake in 71 and rode her to rota spain. Got out in 73. Was wondering if anyone out there got cancer from the exposure to radiation? If so please email me at j.evanish@hotmail.com.
Assigned to the OPs dept as ETN2 while she was in the yard at Bremerton, from there to Charleston, then Gitmo for refresher training, then short time at New London, back to Charleston, then on to Rota for almost 2 years. Left her there in Spain in 1974. Lots of good memories.
