  • Hey Roxanne, the foundry in Groton was haunted. As the story goes it used to be a morgue or a holding area for the bodies when the came back on the train from the war.
  • MLCS Paul was the senior instructor when I was in "A" school. Really never had much interaction with him although from what I saw I dont think the other instructors cared for him much.
Comshaw made the world go round. I never minded making it when I or the shop got something out of it, however I hated doing it when someone else was reaping the benifits. You could get almost anything you wanted for some brass plaques or other brass gedunk. The good ole days, LOL. One of the strangest things we ever got were some lobsters from the divers on the Vulcan. The ship went to RI and the divers went lobster hunting and came back with a whole bunch of lobsters, they gave the shop almost 100 lobsters (I'm sure they were not all "legal" size).
Roxy, I went to A school with Ron Renfrow & Al Bragdon and worked with Bruce Champagne Ron Renfrow, Al Bragdon on the Vulcan. Those are some name I have not heard in a while.
  • This comshaw thing was widespread. The worse ships that I have been on for this type thing was the submarine tenders. The AD's and AR's did their share but usually had enough work that came first so the comshaw was limited.
  • Geraldo Paul use to have Rosie his wife sew his shirt to his dungaree trousers so his shirt tail would stay in , he enjoyed insulting people , he had his junior ML2's Danny and me make his comshaw, told us to use a gagger to keep the cope from dropping out when we pulled the cope up from the drag instead of saying use soldiers ! a lot of high strength yellow brass went out of that CT. foundry to his friends
  • I knew MLSC Paul when he ran Molder 'A' school, He definitely was an ass at times, he also let it be known that he didn't like females in the rate, he was s fat as they get back then, I even witnessed one of his buttons pop off his khaki shirt cause he was so big!
  • Hey guys refresh my memory when is a gagger used in a mold ,is it used horizontally from each side of the cope ?
  • not to change the subject Mr. Lee, but i to was stationed lower base Groton CT (i forget the MLC's name) but rumor had it, that the foundry was haunted. Ever hear that story? I worked there with Champagne, Bragdon, Renfrow and others i can't remember names.
  • ART a short time after I left the base foundry in Groton CT. where Paul was LPO , the so sure of him self was clowning around one day while running down a heat -the foundry was equipped with Ajax Inducto therm
furnaces to change to a higher power level you had to switch power
levers if I remember there were six 1-3 2-3 1-4 2-4 in that order
while clowning around he hit the generator set button ,turning the power
off , then he hit the switch again to try and turn the power back on back on , with the newer furnaces you can do this , the generator in this case burned up ,he was in hot water for a long time , writing the
same report over and over .
Paul was very know it all and he did know the foundry trade very well
making senior chief within 15 years although he was very arrogan and did not like anyone showing him his mistakes , he makes from 1 to 2.5 mil a year now in Hampton ,Va.

    H Lee
  • I knew Paul when he was stationed on the L Y Spear and I was on the Puget Sound in Norfork. I had just transfered to the Sound and we were getting underway for the Med and the foundry was in very bad shape. He helped us out a lot so we could get the shop running right by giving us the supplies we needed. I met up with him again in San Diego when I was rewrighting the ML-3and 2 and ML-1 and C. He was the senior instructor there and I was there for two weeks gathering information and he opened the school and all instructors to me and my questions. He sure knew his shit. He really treated me great.
  • I served with MLCS Paul on my first command the Vulcan AR-5 in 79. He was okay guy. Liked his comshaw. And didn't like being argued with. But if you where on of his molders he took care of you. There were 3 of his going mess cranking and he got all 3 of us asssigned to the chief's mess. Wasn't to bad of stop.

Posablly seeing about starting up a navy molders museum?

I know they dismissed our rate back in 1997. I would hope there are enough of us left to possably  get together and see about creating a museum somewhere  here in the states to preserve our long history and heritage that we all have shared as Molders. Any of you out there please give me a response if you read this Discussion.                                      Thanks.
