  • Hey Steve, someone told me Frank Audette died in the early 90s. I still rememeber him pushing to be the LPO when I really wanted nothing to do with it.
  • i worked for a MLC who would assign about 12-15 hrs of work, so the three of us would work till 19-20, getting it done while he's gone home to the family. he let this go on for awhile, we finally ask him why and he laughed so hard and said i do it to keep you busy, i never said you had to stay later then knock off. and never come up with an idea, cause you owned it from start to finish. it took me awhile but i learned not to volunteer. OMG, don't come to work with a hangover, nothing worse then working for a recovering alcoholic, he'd gi ve yu the noiseiest, sweatyiest job possible......and that laugh, i can still hear it.
  • anyone want to try the chat?
  • When you're talking about legends, don't forget Jerry Edens. He was regarded as one of the most talented molders in the rate in the early 70s, but also one of the craziest SOBs on the shore. He always hung out with the wild ones, like divers, seals, etc. There was one story about him at Mom's in Olongapo that maybe shouldn't be printed. But it was worth hearing.
  • I ran into a whole cast of characters in the Navy but more importantly the ML rate. We all have a host of stories. I'm not sure all of the reputations came from being in the sandbox. I think some reputations were from being an above agerage Molder, but I think others came from what someone did either on or off duty. Some did some hard partying and just did some crazy shit on the beach and others were just good First or Chiefs and either told the Officers where to pack sand or really stuck up for and took care of thier people. Don't "F" with the Molders because they are just not right. Stories and reputations get embellished over the years and that 8" fish tends to grow a little longer each year.
  • I wonder if anyone here remembers a MLC Frank Audette? He was my cheif on the Yellowstone for a few years and I wonder what happend to him.
  • I worked for Mad Dog at SIMA Mayport for a couple of years before he retired. I think I got the "mellow" version of Mad Dog if there is such a thing. I had heard stories about Mag Dog going all the way back to A school and to be honest was a little intimidated to work for him at first especially with him chewing on that pipe and the baseball bat sitting right next to his desk or watching him curl the big ass anvil. After he retired and I made Chief on the Yosemite I asked him pin my anchors on.

I do understand however not being able to work for someone, after Mad Dog retired they put a ML1 (who shall remain nameless but Mark know's who he is) in charge of the shop who was senior to me and I just could not work for him. So I got the hell out of the shop and worked in safety for the next year. Sometimes people just don't click and it is better for one of them to leave rather than getting busted or killing each other.
  • does anyone know what happened to ML2 Malone? He was one of my instructors in Molder A School.
  • I agree with you as far as Holmes and MLCS Paul. As far as Mad Dog goes, I couldent work for him. We were stationed together on the Frank Cable. I just had to leave the shop. I think Paul was the most knowledgeable Molder the Navy at the time. I saw castings that were poured in his shop on the l.y. Spear that other Navy foundrys just dreamed about doing.

Posablly seeing about starting up a navy molders museum?

I know they dismissed our rate back in 1997. I would hope there are enough of us left to possably  get together and see about creating a museum somewhere  here in the states to preserve our long history and heritage that we all have shared as Molders. Any of you out there please give me a response if you read this Discussion.                                      Thanks.
