  • I served on the Sierra in Supply Department, S-1 Division(Supply Office) from May of 1978 until February of 1982. I was first listings man, then later SUADPS Systems Coordinator. I was really fond of the Sierra, and very sorry when it was scrapped. I also enjoyed Nav Sta Charleston. It was truely a beautiful base and it was a pity that it was closed.
  • i was on from 88 to 90. ML3 Elwell i made ml3 right before i left there
  • I served on board the Sierra twice-'74-77,'80-'84. What a ride. ML2 Manasco.
  • In my profile photo I am on the right and former Sierra sailor Pat Jones is on the left. A couple years back I visited him and his family in South Carolina. I retired out of the Naval Reserves after almost 28 years August 1st 2009. Pat receintly made EMC in the Reserves. I served on board from 1982-1984 and again 1985-1987. I met some of the best people ever and still keep in contact with a handful. I served in R-3 division. Would love to hear from anyone else from that period.
  • I am looking for a PN2 Blass from the 1973 crew. I owe him some thanks. In my book I mention how my seabag was robbed on the very first night aboord SIERRA. This guy stepped up and saved my butt, because as a FR I was about to throw in the towel and bag it. If you get the opportunity check out my book's comments on here http://navyvets.ning.com/profiles/blogs/sweepers-sweepeers-many-your
  • Thanks for sharing the pics and stories Harry! It is very interesting to hear about back in the day stories. Keep 'em coming!
  • The USS Sierra was the best duty I had in the Navy. I served with a crazy bunch of guys in R-3 div. What I enjoyed was there was no BS, I ran the photo lab and nobody hassled me. You could't ask for a better divsion officer than Bob Jensen. LT Jensen was was tough but fair but he stuck up for his men. The chiefs helped you instead of sitting on their asses and drinking coffee.
  • USS Sierra- San Juan P.R. 1967: Ten ship destroyer nest tied up to Sierra.

PRIDE

After talking to a few repair sailors I'm seeing something I didn't see at my other commands. Thats is pride: pride in his ship, prie in the work they accomplished. It only took a few minutes talking with Denis Pennington and Dave Asche that I realilized where thier pride was coming from. They worked long hous to get the job done and when it was finnished they had product that they couls see and touch. On the other hand with my other commands especially Heavy Photo Recon Six it seemed all you…

AD/AR MUSEUM SHIP

I sure everyone has heard of the museum ships scattered all over the U.S. There are carriers, subs, destroyers, light ships but no repair ships. I think that is an ommisson that should be corrected. When you think how important the work that they did they deserve to have a museum ship. with most of the ADs and ARs decommissioned and scraped time may be running out. There are about 12 or 14 ADs/ARs mothballed in Ft Eutis Vaginia that are slated for sinking or scraping.
