USS Samuel Gompers (AD-37) was a destroyer tender, the first of her class, and designed to be a floating repair shop for ships of the U.S. Navy either in port or at sea. It was named for Samuel Gompers, a distinguished American labor leader during the late nineteenth century.

  • I was on the Fat Sam from 74 to 77. Made 2 wespacs, but niether was a shellback journey. Pete worked with me during the 76 wespac. I went to DATC-FMAGPAC for 2 years, then back to the Gompers.
  • I did two tours aboard the Fat Sam....from 1982- 1986, and then again from 1990 - 1993. I also did three wespacs, and became a shellback on the 82 wespac. I can not believe they did away with the Initiation!
  • Made three wes-pac's on the Gompers, 1976 the 1978-1979 with Jim Cowan then 1980-1981. Got my butt beat on the last one when became a shellback.
  • I helped build the Sam Gompers, and rode her to Yokosuka, where I transferred to the Naval Hospital there for surgery on my left foot. When I left the hospital, I picked up the KLONDIKE (AR-22) in San Diego.
  • SERVED ABOARD THE USS SAMUEL GOMPERS 1978-1979. SURVIVED WESTPAC 78. R-2 DIVISION SHIP'S FOUNDRY 81-A AND R-2 DIVISION OFFICE.

Memories

I am a "plank owner" member of the commissioning crew for the Gompers with Capt. Risch. I served on her from July 1967 until the spring of 1970, when I was transferred to USS Southerland DD-743, the first ship into Tokyo Bay after the Japanese surrender at the end of WW2. I was in the Interior Communications shop, R-3 Division as a gyrocompass technician. My brother enlisted the year after me and also became an IC fireman and served with me on the Gompers for three years and one WESPAC tour. I…
